January 2010 Course Catalog

Pierian Springs is introducing a unique selection of courses for its January term. These classes are refreshing, motivating and not run of the mill. Many are structured to meet the requirements of a   full one semester course of either core or elective credit. All classes are accredited with the GAC. Many of these classes have limited seating so please contact us if there’s a class you really want to take. Special rates for current students.

Boxing

Theater Intensive

 (Group A) – Monday 10:30-3:30; $300 (Karen Howes, Brooke Hamilton, Prisca Strother, dance instructor tba, Jay Star)

Five professional artists/instructors provide classes in voice, art, dance, and acting to work with students towards a  major production of a musical play for the end of February. There will be additional class/rehearsal time during the month of February to get ready for the show. (If you sign up for both Group A and B, the cost is $450 for both)

 

Planning, Organizing and Doing Community Service

Monday 10:30-3:30; $200

24 hrs of community svc for your resume; plan and participate in off-site activities which help your community

 

Physical Science

Introduction to Logic

Thursday 10:00-12:00; $125 (Myrricia Hollman)

This is a special opportunity to explore a topic in mathematics typically reserved for college coursework.  In this course, you will learn the basics of symbolic logic and logic proofs.  If you like logic puzzles and enjoy math, this is a great course to take.  It is readily accessible to high school students and is both challenging and fun. 

  

Math Competition Prep

Tuesdays 10:00-12:00 $125 (Myrricia Hollman)

Are you interested in math competitions?  Will you be competing in the American Mathematics Competition or the Georgia Tech High School Math Competition in February?  We will work through a wide range of challenging math problems to help you perform you best!

  

Introduction to Electricity and Electronics

Monday 10:30-12:30; $150  (Tom Hiott)

learn how to wire circuits and  build electrical toys and gadgets. This is a very hands-on, fun course in which students will be able to walk away with their own creation. Plan to build a radio.

 

Health for High School

Tuesday 12:45-3:00 and Thursday 12:30-2:00; $300 (Lisa White)

Provides knowledge and skills to help students adopt and maintain healthy behaviors, including an in-depth study of promoting personal health and wellness, physical activity, healthy eating, promoting safety and preventing unintentional injury and violence, promoting mental and emotional health, a tobacco-free lifestyle and an alcohol- and other drug-free lifestyle and promoting human development and family health. Offers ½ carneige credit hour and fulfills Georgia’s requirement for graduation.

 

World Religions

Tuesday and Thursday 12:45-3:00; $325 (Trella Walker)

Introduces students to the central beliefs of the world's major religion. The origins and development, central teachings, devotional practices, institutions and cultural expressions of Aboriginal Spirituality, African Indigenous Religion, Hinduism, Jainism, Buddhism, Sikhism,Taoism, Confucianism, Shinto, Zoroastrianism, Judaism, Christianity, Islam, and Baha’i, will be considered in relation to common themes of human experience. Weekly field trips to neighboring houses of faith.

 

Georgia History

Tuesday 9:30-3:30; $325 (Brooke Hamilton)

An entire semester worth of Georgia History in one month. This class teaches history through daily excursions and field trips. Outings include The Atlanta History Museum, The Martin Luther King Museum, the Capitol Building. Kennesaw National Park, The Wren’s Nest, and Fernbank.  Don’t just learn Georgia history, but experience it!  Ms. Brooke Hamilton is a native Georgian, and her family dates in Georgia back before the Revolutionary War.  She might even share old family albums and heirlooms. 

 

Fencing

Wednesday 9:00-10:15; $70 (John Terris)

We provide the equipment and excellent instruction from an AFC master.

 

Video Game Design

Wednesday 10:30-2:30; $300 (Jessica Henley)

Use the  Maya software program  to create a video game concept. Learn to design monsters, environments and vehicles. Students will participate within a team working in a production environment with job roles, such as team leader, storyboard artist, prop designer, 3d modeler, 3d Animator, and more!

Science Olympiad

Thursday 2:00-4:00; $100 (Lisa White)

Ramping up for the February competition.This is a very hands on and fun activity-based science class.

 

Marketing and Advertising/Creating a Business

Friday 9:30-12:30 $250 (Jessica Henley)

Design marketing materials such as T-shirts, postcards, and business cards. This class includes the basics of website layout and design, basic graphic design, color theory, illustration, and two dimensional and 3D logo design
