Fencing
Grades 6-12
Instructor:  Elizabeth Pelypenko

Fencing is an ancient sport which has evolved into the Olympic sport we see today.  It has been
described as “physical chess.”  In this beginner’s class, we will  learn basic fencing footwork,
bladework and terminology.  We will also do fencing exercises and games which build speed and
agility for this mental sport.  There will also be opportunities to come to local tournaments to watch
fencers compete at various levels.  Equipment will be provided for the first semester, then students
will purchase their own.

We will use a sword called a foil with a button spring on the tip.  You are only allowed to touch
your opponent with the tip of your foil on his valid target area, which is the torso.  A point is
scored if you had the right of way when you touch your opponent on his valid target area.  There
are various attacks and defenses that can be used in order to achieve this goal.  Only the person
with the right of way gets the point even if both people touch at the same time.  If both people
touch at the same time, the referee determines if one of the fencers had the right of way, otherwise
the bout continues and no point is awarded.  Off target touches do not count.  A fencing bout lasts
for 3 minutes or until one fencer scores 5 touches, whichever comes first.

Many recommend that foil be learned first, before trying the other weapons (epee and saber).  The
other forms do not use right of way, have different target areas, and methods of scoring touches.

Instructor:  Camille Scent

Get fit, get centered and have fun!  Yoga is great exercise - a total body workout that increases
flexibility, builds strength and improves balance.  It is also much more than just good exercise - as
you gain control over your body, you'll also be developing control over your mind & learning how
to stay relaxed and centered (even when life gets stormy!)  Come join the fun - no experience
necessary, just bring an open mind and a positive attitude.  (and remember to wear loose,
comfortable clothing)  (This class is for teens only; sorry but no parents or younger siblings in this
one - thanks!)

Chorus
Grades 6-12
Instructor:  Mindy Carter

This class is designed to provide an encouraging and fun atmosphere for middle and high school
students of all levels to explore their musical talents. Weekly classes will teach vocal skills, proper
breathing, diction, music reading, vocal blending, expressive singing and musical interpretation.
There will be one end of semester performance and opportunities to perform for community
events and groups. Our repertoire will consist of Popular Music, Musical Theater, and Art Songs.
The acting class combines work in voice, diction, physicality, character development, scene study
and improvisation to help develop the young actor’s ability to create believable and interesting
characters, environments and situations. This is a non-academic class which may require outside
work in memorizing, writing, or analyzing scripted scenes. The course focuses on acting skills and
technique, but also provides a good deal of class time developing focus, awareness and mental
alertness. Actors are also able to perform in several shows presented to the public throughout the
year.  For more information on Young Actor's Ensemble, go to www.youngactorsensemble.org.
